Post subject: high bandwidth usage between terminal farm and RDP clients

I've got a 4 server TS farm at our colo that has about 250 users from our 17 remote offices connecting to. I've capped the RDP client user experience at 56Kb. 12Mb Fractional DS3 at colo that carries RDP and other traffic.

Problem I'm having is users are experiencing session lock ups, dropped sessions and sluggish performance.

I've run some packet captures and it appears most of this problem is due to very high per session bandwidth usage. I routinely see RDP traffic FROM the TS farm to RDP client sessions bursting up to 1Mb. This is per session and not an aggregate total.

I also plan to implement QoS on our switch (which is honored on our MPLS vendors WAN) to prioritize to RDP traffic. However, we're still bursting above our 12Mb DS3 which is resulting in packet loss.

Shouldn't the 56Kb user experience cap be limiting this? Anything else I can check for? Thanks-

Matt

Has Audio mapping been disabled?
Audio can take a lot of bandwidth. Depending on the selected audio quality.

How about print jobs?
Are you using local printers?
A print job of 1 MB or more is not an exception.

I advise to have a look at http://www.thinprint.com. (For the Netherlands there is a Dutch site at http://www.shiftingviews.nl/producten/thinprint.html ) ThinPrint can reduce needed bandwidth up to 98% without print quality loss.

Hi there,
We are working at setting up a ASP for a client to allow them to RDP to one
of our servers, and then, from there, PowerTerm to the unix server we are
hosting. We have choosen this method do the nature of the unix data, a lost
connection would also in turn kill the Unix session, so we felt this would be
the best method possible.
