Post subject: Resetting TS Licenses
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>termserv>clients (more info?)

Hi

I have a Windows 2000 server which is running Terminal Services. Most of the
TS clients accessing this are on W2k or XP so there are no licensing issues
there, but we also have a few old Win98 laptops which we use as well. We
bought 5 CAL licenses to cover this and until recently that has worked fine.
I had assumed that these worked on a per user basis.

I've now had an issue where one of the 98 laptops couldn't connect and after
investigating I've realised that this is because the 5 CALs are actually
issued on a per device basis and there aren't any licenses left. I have two
questions about this:

1. Looking at the Terminal Services CAL Token panel in Terminal Services
Licensing I can see the 5 permanent licenses which have been issued, but they
have Expiry Dates listed. If these are permanent licenses why is there an
Expiry Date? Is it the case that after expiry the next time the device logs
on it has to go through the issue of a temporary license again before it
re-obtains the permanent license?

2. One of the permanent licenses listed is on a laptop we're not using
anymore. I'd like to get rid of this so I can free up a slot for another
laptop. There doesn't seem to be any way of removing a device from the list -
how can I do this? Or do I have to wait until the expiry date, as I've
hypothesised in question 1 above? This seems a pretty clumsy way of
administrating things.

I know you can reset temprary licenses on the device iteself by amending the
registry, but that doesn't solve this particular isse.

Thanks
Ian
