We are running Win2000 TS SP4. Clients are connecting remotely with thin
clients. Randomly, throughout the day, when a user tries to print, it tells
them they can't and when they try to open up the printers folder, the session
freezes up. The only way to temporarily fix the problem is to restart the
spooler service. The user then can open up the folder and then will need to
refresh to see the printers and then can print successfully. There are no
errors in the event log, no extra printers or drivers were installed lately,
no high spikes in the CPU, the spooler service doesn't actually stop, it
continues to run, until we restart it. Some days it won't happen at all,
others it will happen every few hours.

Doing research, it seems everyone points to printer drivers, but nothing had
changed in quite sometime. I do see error messages when I connect from my XP
machine, but that has always been the case.

I am out of any ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've seen this behavior before on our terminal servers... More than likely,
it's a third party driver that's causing the issue.

Best of luck.

Do you mean third party printing drivers or any third party driver? We don't
have any third party printer drivers installed and nothing has changed with
any other driverss. These servers have been operating for a number of years
successfully and nothing has changed.

Thanks for the advice, but might you have anymore??

The third party drivers I was referring to are indeed those for printers.
I can't find any information regarding your specific problem, but in my
experience, just staying on top of the windows updates and rebooting once in
a while might help out (our old W2K TS would start to get flaky after about
fifteen days...).
