Post subject: Client serial port redirection and serial printers

We are running a Win2003 terminal server. I have several clients that I redirect the serial ports for printing (POS reciept printers). Every time I re-boot the server, the port names (i.e. TS034, TS035, etc.) change for the re-directed ports. It looks like the port names change based on the order the clients connect back to the terminal server.

The only way I got any of this to work was to make a CMD file to connect the printer each time the user logs on. After a server re-boot I edit the CMD files to fix the port names. This also requires the the users are menbers of the Power Users group to be able to re-connect the printers. I don't like having the users at a remote store as members of Power Users.

Anyone have any ideas how to keep the the names of the redirected ports from changing?

This is by design. Terminal Services redirected printer ports are assigned and reused as they are available. For a detailed description, check the "Example Scenario" section of this KB article:

Print jobs that are sent to Terminal Services redirected printers may ...nt on a

Why does it matter which TSxxx port is used? Your application should just use the printer name as Windows sees it.

Note that AFAIK, COMport redirection is not necessary for printer redirection. If the printer is locally configured and uses the COM port, it will be redirected through Device redirection, and you don't need Port Level redirection. But that's a sidenote.

The client is a Linux-based HP thin client, so there are no client side "local" printers. The printer needs to be a local printer on the server.

The whole idea was to get Windows based machines out of the remote store.

The only solution I can come up with is to put a two-port serial print server at the store (not easy to find these days!)
