(Msg. 1) Posted: Thu Feb 14, 2008 2:51 pm Post subject: Terminal server user gets too many printers
Hi all
I am using terminal server installed over server 2003 ent edition. There is one remote desktop user who usually logs on with terminal server. The problem is whenever he logs on he gets all the printers from that server which has terminal server?
I want this terminal server user to have only one default printer. Help plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Do you mean that this user sees the printers from other users sessions?
If so, check which groups the user belongs to. Only Administrators and Power Users (maybe also Printer Operators) can see other users redirected session printers.

So the printers are installed directly on the Terminal Server?
Then it is by design that users see all these printers, that's the whole idea with installing printers on a Terminal Server, to make them available to all users.
But as Administrator you should be able to change the security settings on the printers. This will at least disable the user's ability to print to these printers. I'm not sure if it also hides the printers for the user.
Or am I still not getting the situation right? Why have you installed printers on the Terminal Server if your users are not supposed to print to them?

Yes you got it right this time, true the printers are all installed on the terminal server and they were there and controlled by print manager before I installed the TS. Yes I can shift all my printers to any other server but I was looking for any easy way to avoid the hassle of shifting my printers. I have tried configuring the TS configuration, as well as the Environment tab under that specific user but to no avail. I think you are right the TS users get all the printers installed on that machine(server). Its strange but there should be a way to assign TS users to use only certain printers and not others?

Well, it's not so strange, I think.
Basically, you are using the Terminal Server as a Print Server as well, and allowing your users to logon to the Print Server.
A Terminal Server works best if it runs on a dedicated server, i.e. it's not combined with any other server function.
