Post subject: Terminal server access (newbie)

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and also to setting up Terminal Services. Trawled through the entries here but couldn't find anything to match my question, so apologies if this has been dealt with already and feel free to point me in that direction!

I have set up two servers (under the direction of the people supplying our database software):
Server 1: Windows Server 2003 SBS Standard (hosting the database)
Server 2: Windows Server 2003 Standard (being used as terminal server)

Our needs are fairly simple (as am I) - 5 users to connect to the terminal server in order to run the database software. 2 of them are in Edinburgh, where the servers are located. 3 are in Glasgow.

I can get one PC in Edinburgh to connect using a local IP address. I've also managed to join this PC to the .local domain and have successfully connected by RDP to the TS using an external IP address.

My problem is, I cannot replicate this for the other machine in Edinburgh, nor for anyone in Glasgow.

Can anyone advise me on what I may have done wrong or if I've just missed something stupid?

Cheers
Rich

So your TS is directly accessible from the Internet? That's not a very secure setup.

Many things are done differently in an SBS domain, compared to a standard Windows domain. You'll want to use Remote Web Workspace (RWW) to connect to both your servers and PCs from the outside.

I can't give you any details, I'm not very familiar with SBS. You are better of posting in the public SBS newsgroup. It's not replicated on this site, but you can access it through Google groups:

Rich,

Do you have the Edinburgh network behind a firewall or you are using the SBS machine with two network adapters to connect to the Internet?

Is the local client you are trying to connect to the domain able to access the Internet?

Have you checked the 'bad' local client machine to verify it is getting an IP from the SBS machine and that the SBS machines IP is the primary DNS?

The Glasgow machines don't need to be domain members to access the Terminal Server.

Do you have a static public IP?

Have you opened port 3389 in your NAT firewall?

Have you properly routed that traffic to the IP of the TS?

Does the TS have Internet access and a static IP?

Is it's primary DNS the IP of the SBS machine?

SOme details about the setup would help.
