Post subject: security error client could not connect to terminal server

Hello,

I have an existing terminal server 2003 standard edition running as a license server (non-domain controller) set in per device mode. I added a new server and configured through GPO the license server to connect to. When I launch remote desktop connection to the new terminal server (2003 RC2 Enterprise edition) from a WXPpro clients I receive the following error.

"Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the terminal server"

Troubleshooting from MS says the certificate may be corrupt to deactivate and reactivate the license server. As this is a production server it looks like weekend work on the horizon. Can anyone help with the error before calling the clearing house to recover CAL's?

There's one thing you can try before uninstalling the LS: remove the certificates.

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters

Backup this key and then delete these 3 values:
Certificate
X 509 Certificate
X 509 Certificate ID

Then reboot the server. The values will be recreated. If that doesn't fix it, you might have to call the Clearinghouse. Make sure that you have the paperwork at hand (with the licensepack numbers).
But most of your licenses will be there if you just deactivate and reactivate. Only unissued licenses have to be re-issued. The fix is that you get another certificate by activating through the Clearinghouse.

I did in fact do this step on the new server. Seems funny that by adding another TServer you would need to reinstall licensing. I will be deploying three more servers so maybe it is best to reactivate. Thanks for the quick response.

Remove the certificate on all Terminal Servers and the TS Licensing Server.

Note that deactivating and reactivating is not the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the service. I made a mistake myself in my previous post by writing "before you uninstal...". I don't think that you have to reinstall at all, and with luck, you don't have to reactivate, if the removal of the certificates works.
