Post subject: dos application

I wish to change our platform from Novell 5.1 to windows 2003 Terminal Server.
(Thin client)

Present Hardware
*--------------*
Pentium III Server 800 MHz 18 GB and around 100 Nodes mostly with
Windows 98 and XP having Novell Client.

Present Software
*--------------*
Mainly Cipper 5.2 Based DOS Applications linked with Exospace.
(16 Bit DOS applications) and MS office.
Modules include Purchase,Inventory,Sales,Marketting,Payroll,Accounts,
Office Automation softwares like letters, emails, mailings.. etc.
Approximately 10 lacs lines of codes (1 Million)
Approximately 100 users at a time each one having two applications
loaded at a time.

Problems faced on Test windows 2003 Terminal Server.
*--------------------------------------------------*
(Pentium VI Machine with 4 GB memory and 4 Thin Clients)
1) No of users could not go beyond 10. (Problem due to Keyboard Polling)
-> Solved by installing Tame DOS

2) When Processor oriented activities like Printing Ledger, generating MIS ..etc.
are given from 4 to 5 Nodes , CPU Utilization goes up to 100% and remains
there and feel like system halted.

During the test we found that memory utilizaion was less. (Each NTVDM used
around 4 to 5 MB space only)

Is it possible for a 100 users , 200 DOS applications run on a terminal server?
What is the best solution other than re-writing the applications?

Migrating Clipper to 32 Bit like Harbour,xBase++ didn't work because of
the lack of source code of libraries and the modifications required in clipper
code.

DOS applications are a pain on TS because of their nasty habit of monopolizing system resources.
In stead of using TameDOS, which only fixes the keyboard polling problem, try out ThreadMaster, which is a freeware application based CPU Quota management tool.

Note that even if ThreadMaster is able to solve the immediate CPU problem, it is highly unlikely that your server can sustain mote than 30 - 40 concurrent user sessions.
