(Msg. 1) Posted: Mon Dec 31, 2007 3:42 pm Post subject: WinTerm connections all of sudden slow
Hello all!
I have a terminal server on my domain that is accessed by approx 35 -40 users of which 25 are Winterm machines. About 5 days ago my Winterm machines started experiencing EXTREMELY slow connectivity. (Imagine trying to connect to Terminal Server via 9600bps modem!!!) The pcs that access the terminal server are not experiencing this issue. I have not added any new software or hardware to the terminal server (or any other server) in the past 30 days. It is not switch related as they spread across 4 switches and I have PCs on each switch accessing the same server and applications and they are not experiencing the problems. The Winterms are slow BEFORE they are logged on to the server (trying to login), they connect every time, just slow. I do see a brief speed up from time to time (no apparent reason) or if I unplug the units and them plug them in, lasts approx. 10 - 15 mins. I don't have anything showing up in my logs and I am out of ideas. I did reboot the server about 3 days ago thinking that I was having a memory problem, no change.
A little server info to help.
Windows 2003 32bit SP2 up to date on hot fixes except .net 3.0 and a couple of language packs
Dual XEON 2.4 GHz processors
4 GBs RAM
200GB SCSI Drives
Running application specific to our industry, but has not be changed in over 120 days, plus users are running Office applications and internet explorer. Server does some printing, through printer mapping back to local machines (needed for industry specific application)
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!!

Sounds weird!
Have you checked if there is a firmware update for the terminals?
Does the problem disappear when you reset them to the factory defaults?
I assume that the terminals are DHCP clients? Have you checked the DHCP server? And the DNS server?
Since your server is fully patched, maybe this started after the latest Windows Updates?

I haven't installed any patches in a couple of weeks, so there was nothing I could associate with the change. As for the firmware I actually have an HP unit on my network and it is experiencing the same issues, so I don't think that could be it.
You referred to DNS or DHCP, what do you think in either of those could cause it only on the Winterms? The reason I ask is I do run "slim" on my IP addresses from time to time.

I didn't have anything specific in mind, I am just asking question in the hope that it triggers something for you.
Since most thin clients run a different operation system than normal Windows XP clients (linux, CE.NET, or some native OS depending on the manufacturer, unless they run XP Embedded), there can be all sorts of general problems which are specific for thin clients in a network.
Since you say that they are slow *before* logging on, I thought that maybe they have a problem with name resolution, either because some DNS problem in itself, or a wrong gateway / subnet mask, or a problem with the DHCP server, which usually defines the address of the DNS server to the clients.

I appreciate the help. I couldn't find anything in my DNS or DHCP that appeared to be causing the problem. I am currently research a firmware update to see if maybe that will resolve the issue. If it does I will share the info.
