Post subject: Can TS be restricted on a Win2K3 server to remote access

I have a Win2K3 file server where I want to give some users remote access. If I install TS, will the current local users still be able to access the server without TS CALS?

No, as soon as you install Terminal Services, you need a TS CAL for every user or device (apart from a single connection to the console, which is only available for Administrators).

That's what I was afraid of. I had several people tell me it was possible but it just didn't seem logical. Is there any way (other than TS) to increase the number of Remote Desktop for Admin simultaneous connections to this server?

If I remember it correctly, 2X ThinClientServer allows this. When I first stared out experimenting with RDP, this was the first thing I tried and I didn't have Terminal Services installed at that time. But this was some time ago and I don't fully remember, but give it a shot.

I'll give it a try. Thanks.

I don't think it's possible with 2X, and if it is (and there is other software which enables this) then you would still need to buy TS CALs, otherwise it's a violation of the EULA.

Will Windows 2008 terminal service enforce CALs with Per-User licensing?

Right now windows 2003 TS only enforces per-device CALs. The Per-User CAL enforcement is based on the honor system.

Windows 2008 still doesn't enforce Per User licensing, but they are managed in the sense that you can generate a report and see how many are issued.
