Post subject: Remote assistance through Citrix changes display properties?
Archived from groups: alt>os>citrix (more info?)

This is a strange problem, may not be related to Citrix at all.
Please bear with me . . .

Our IT guys use a Microsoft SMS tool to connect remotely to our
computers to install software and troubleshoot user problems. One guy
in particular does so through Citrix. I.e., he connects to a Citrix
desktop running Windows Server 2003 and then launches an SMS Remote
Tool to connect to my Windows XP desktop.

There are two things I notice if he has done this when I am not logged
on:

First, the buttons/panels in Outlook 2003 lose their 3D look. This is
not a big deal, but maybe it helps identify the problem.

The second problem has to do with running exceed apps (e.g., xterm) on
my dual monitors. Normally I have both monitors set to 1600x1200
resolution, 32-bit color. I can launch an xterm, move it back and
forth between the monitors, resize it to cover both monitors, etc.
However, after this IT guy has accessed my machine remotely, when I
launch an xterm, I get this message:

"Your Xconfig Screen Definition settings are incompatible with your
current Display settings. Exceed will run using a default Screen
configuration. For more details look in the Exceed Log file."

The log file says:

"Warning: Screen 0 uses monitors that have different depths. This
screen will instead only use the Primary monitor."

and the resulting xterm window is restricted to the primary monitor.
This is the same error/log file/behaviour I would get by changing the
color depth on one monitor but not the other. However, when I go into
the display settings for each monitor, the color depth and resolution
are unchanged and the same for both monitors.

Furthermore, changing the color depth on one or both monitors does not
cause the first problem to occur (Outlook buttons losing their 3D
look).

The only way I've figured out to fix this problem is by having this
guy connect to my machine *while* I am logged on. As soon as he
disconnects, Outlook gets its 3D look back and I can launch exceed
apps with no problem.

Does anyone have a clue what the root cause is?

Thanks,
Lee
